The threat of stopping all oil passing through the Strait of Hormuz has been a part of a long term threatened response that the west would face if they invaded Iran. The same economic warfar that the dictator Hugo Chavez tries to leverage aganist the west as well. The funny part with Hugo is that he really has no immediate threat since he is only important to himself. The case of Iran involves alot more than just one dictator’s pride since they have made threats against the stat of Isreal.
I recently heard a pretty resonible solution to the current problem which basically suggested
setting a private ultimatum to the Iranians.
Release within x# days or:
“We take out (bomb) their only oil refinery (no gas for them)
Naval blockade (no gas can be imported)
Within about a month, they can truly live like in the good old days of the 8th century with horse/oxen and cart”
It seems in all their threats they fail to realize that they have not planned for the future of their gas needs either. The fact is we are a better commodity as a custome than they are as a supplier. We have the gas and allies to get by without them, but can they survive liong without us? Throw in the added possibility of taking away their own abaility to produce oil and leaving them with no established means to get imported oil as their navy looks up from the bottom or of the same Strait of Hormuz they claim they will control.
What you have here is anothert case of a dictator using his countries resources to leverage his personal position. Like Hugo, Iran didnt plan to even need to find alternatives to selling oil, and if they cut their own throats with economic warfare, the truth is that we can last alot longer than they can. The fact is that the same militias and thugs you emply and supply arms to will not stay loyal long when the payoffs stop coming from the oil revenue.
I love this plan, this gives them a chance to stew in their own inability to diversify the economy, this gives them a chance to se what happens when you deal with killers and havn’t the money to pay them off, and they will just wilt and die off from power with no material to try to spin into sympathy.
