quran in courtRALEIGH, N.C. - Witnesses and jurors being sworn in at state courthouses can take their oath using any religious text, not just the Bible, a judge ruled Thursday.

Oaths Using Quran In Court?
Guess what? Im ok with this, this is the right decision by this judge.
Remember the backbone of our country is that you dont get to like everything everyone else thinks, but respect their right to think it.

Local host Jeff Katz pointed out how some of the passages and teachings in the Quran may contridict the goal of court in the first place. His suggestion was that lying when needed is encouraged in the Quran. I dont know this for sure, and dont doubt it is at the very least one interpretation, but I dont see that as relevent.

The fact is that it is not for us to judge “how” a muslim interprets the Quran, just that we ackowledge their right to intepret and believe as they wish.

I think we can all agree that very many Christians act in ways that do not agree with the goals of our court as well.

When I see the anti-abortion crowd approaching 12 - 13 year olds, that doesn’t agree with justice in the courts either, but that too is their right.

We should not assume every religious person interprets the worst of any book, and allowing the choice itself is our sole responsibility.

The concept of a religious symbol in the courtrrom to inspire honesty is a bit outdated to begin with, but the honest and American thing to do is to allow witnesses to choose what is best for their beliefs.

Remember that this will not be the person on trial in most occasions, this will be an innocent witness to a crime that is serving the public with their presence.

Here is the story and the spin from By STEVE HARTSOE, Associated Press Writer.

Judge Paul Ridgeway said both common law and state Supreme Court precedent allow witnesses and jurors to use the text “most sacred and obligatory upon their conscience.”

The ruling came after the American Civil Liberties Union argued that limiting that text to the Bible alone was unconstitutional because it favored Christianity over other religions.

The issue surfaced when Muslims tried to donate copies of the Quran to Guilford County’s two courthouses. Two judges declined to accept the texts, saying that taking an oath on the Quran was illegal under state law.

State law currently allows witnesses preparing to testify in court to take their oath in three ways: by laying a hand over “the Holy Scriptures,” by saying “so help me God” without the use of a religious book, or by an affirmation using no religious symbols.

The group sought a court order clarifying that the law was broad enough to allow the use of multiple religious texts, or else declare the statute unconstitutional.

Though the judge stopped short of that, the ACLU still considered the ruling “a great victory.”

“As of today all people can use the holy text of their choice,” said Seth Cohen, an ACLU attorney who argued the case.

A trial court judge initially dismissed the ACLU’s suit in December 2005, ruling it was moot because there was no actual controversy at the time.

An appeals court panel allowed the case to go forward in January, after the ACLU added Syidah Mateen as a plaintiff. In its decision, the appeals court cited Mateen’s claim that her request to place her hand on the Quran as a witness in a domestic violence case was denied in 2003.

The state has 30 days to appeal Thursday’s ruling.

    “Fight and slay the Unbelievers wherever ye find them. Seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem of war.” Qur’an, Sura 9:5

    The list of principles being taught is long. A few examples include:

    * The infidel must be conquered; the world-wide caliphate must be established;
    * the Jews and Christians are especially dangerous and nasty, although no unbeliever is ever “good” or “innocent.”
    * ANY LAND WHERE A MUSLIM HAS SAT FOOT IS MUSLIM LAND.
    * The spread of Islam is a religious obligation.
    * There can be no law or government that is not derived from the Koran, because the Koran comes straight from the mouth of

    Allah, and so it is perfect as it is.
    * Anything man-made, any law or government NOT derived from the Koran, is false, invalid.
    * Israel must be wiped off the face of the earth.
    * Killing an infidel is OK, especially if the infidel refuses to convert, or if it is in the service of Islam.
    * Women are stupid.
    * Most of hell is populated by women. …
    * It is a religious obligation to substitute the Koran for other kinds of constitutions.

    It’s to lie to Infidels in the name of Islam.

    Dawah, Kitman Taqiyya? (lying for Islam) Using virtually every trick, every bit of misrepresentation, every sly eliding of the truth…
