Where they stand on the immigration plan
Here’s what the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area’s U.S. senators and representatives say about the Bush administration’s proposed overhaul of immigration laws:

OPPOSED

Rep Sue Myrick, R-Charlotte: “I think it’s a slap in the face to the 4 million in our country legally who are already in the system awaiting citizenship.”

Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-Cherryville: “The Senate’s proposal is nothing more than amnesty wearing make-up — it’s easier to look at, but just as ugly underneath.”

Rep. Robin Hayes, R-Concord: “The Senate proposal includes a provision, which I am against, to allow illegal immigrants to purchase legal immigration status for $5,000.”

Rep. John Spratt, D-York: “It’s not tough enough.”

Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C.: “I recognize that immigration reform is urgently needed, but I cannot support the current bill considered in the Senate because it creates a new path to citizenship for those here illegally.”

Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C.: “This is amnesty. It undermines the rule of law in our country and it is terribly unfair to those waiting to come to America legally.”

IN FAVOR

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.: “We establish procedures to deal with the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants, allowing them to stay under our rules — not theirs. They will be placed on probation and pay fines, learn English, and assimilate into American society.”

UNCOMMITTED

Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C.: “I voted in favor of a procedural motion to move to debate on the immigration reform proposal. I will be monitoring the amendment process very closely as the debate unfolds over the coming weeks.”

Rep. Mel Watt, D-Charlotte: No statement. (Rep. Watt is out of the country.)

Elizabeth Dole, it is not immigration reform that is urgently needed. Do not muddy the water. It is enforcement reform that is needed.

    Lindsey Graham said this morning
“Without George Bush we would not be where we are today”
    SAID WHAT??
Well, he’s taken only SIX years to put us where we are today. That is probably his only utterance I agree completely with.
And look where we are today. The building is on fire floating down the river heading for the waterfall!

    That’s an optimistic asessment.
