Ron Paul On Anchor babies

Is Ron Paul the only candidate not just saying what people and interest groups want to hear? Is he actually standing up and speaking the obvious truths we all see around us?

A recent article in the Houston Chronicle discusses the problem of so-called anchor babies, children born in U.S. hospitals to illegal immigrant parents. These children automatically become citizens, and thus serve as an anchor for their parents to remain in the country. Our immigration authorities understandably are reluctant to break up families by deporting parents of young babies. But birthright citizenship, originating in the 14th amendment, has become a serious cultural and economic dilemma for our nation.

In some Houston hospitals, administrators estimate that 70 or 80% of the babies born have parents who are in the country illegally. As an obstetrician in south Texas for several decades, I can attest to the severity of the problem.

It’s the same story in California, Arizona, and New Mexico. And the truth is most illegal immigrants who have babies in U.S. hospitals do not have health insurance and do not pay their hospital bills.

This obviously cannot be sustained, either by the hospitals involved or the taxpayers who end up paying the bills.

No other wealthy, western nations grant automatic citizenship to those who simply happen to be born within their borders to non-citizens.

These nations recognize that citizenship involves more than the physical location of one’s birth; it also involves some measure of cultural connection and allegiance. In most cases this means the parents must be citizens of a nation in order for their newborn children to receive automatic citizenship.

Make no mistake, Americans are happy to welcome immigrants who follow our immigration laws and seek a better life here.

America is far more welcoming and tolerant of newcomers than virtually any nation on earth. But our modern welfare state creates perverse incentives for immigrants, incentives that cloud the issue of why people choose to come here.

The real problem is not immigration, but rather the welfare state magnet.

Hospitals bear the costs when illegal immigrants enter the country for the express purpose of giving birth.

But illegal immigrants also use emergency rooms, public roads, and public schools. In many cases they are able to obtain Medicaid, food stamps, public housing, and even unemployment benefits. Some have fraudulently collected Social Security benefits.

Of course many American citizens also use or abuse the welfare system. But we cannot afford to open our pocketbooks to the rest of the world. We must end the perverse incentives that encourage immigrants to come here illegally, including the anchor baby incentive.

Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire (Second Edition)

I’ve introduced legislation that would amend the Constitution and end automatic birthright citizenship. The 14th amendment was ratified in 1868, on the heels of the Civil War. The country, especially the western territories, was wide open and ripe for homesteading. There was no welfare state to exploit, and the modern problems associated with immigration could not have been imagined.

Our founders knew that unforeseen problems with our system of government would arise, and that’s precisely why they gave us a method for amending the Constitution. It’s time to rethink birthright citizenship by amending the 14th amendment.

this is SOOOO SOOO true. we pay too much money to support the rest of the world and we need to stop.
people without cultural ties to this country who are not citizens should not be able to use our hospitols and doctors to have children that will effectively anchor them here. I think we need to get rid of the birthright citizenship ASAP. look at these “anchor babies” they grew up and now are marching and waving mexican flags….Im all for flag waving but it better be red white and blue….this is a perfect example how a different culture is being implanted in on our soil and it is dangerous. people waving mexican flags supporting illegal immigration..and why..because they dont understand what it means to be american…swear to uphold the constitution…cut ties with the old country and be american….this will destroy american culture…
Im tired of living in the united states of mexico. end the birth right, put up the fence, stop the illegals, and only let people in legally to work.

    Jason,

You only *think* they are mexicans; many are actually from Honduras, Guatamala, Ecuador, and other South and Central American countries. I think your statement might be slightly more true if you talked about “hispanic” immigrants, but really, there are many eastern european immigrants in this country, you just can’t see them because they are white, and keep quiet so you can’t hear their strange accent.

But immigration policy shouldn’t be about nationality. It should be about individuals. Our great country has long had many waves of ethnic-specific immigration: Italian, Swedish, Irish, etc. They were assimilated just fine (although it often takes 2-3 generations)

Current policy limits immigration by nationality. I feel this is wrong. America’s policy should be “first come, first served.” If you show up healthy at the border checkpoint, with your paperwork filled out, and plan for working then: “Welcome to America!”

Once the yearly quota is filled, (perhaps 2-3% of current population) then “come back next year.”

But if you try to cut in line, don’t bother to fill out your paperwork, or are only coming here to take advantage of social welfare programs then: “I hear you knocking but you can’t come in.”

Current immigration policy creates a hidden underclass, precisely because legal means to immigrate are artificially restricted. Combined with the welfare magnet, this 1-2 punch creates a huge demand, and then leaves only the criminal “coyote” to fulfill the it.

    Yes,Illegal Aliens come from everywhere,But….
MEXICO,Yes MEXICO is doing everything it can
to create a MEXICAN NATION within the borders
of the USA! By changing its laws to permit dual citizenship, aiding, abetting and even urging its citizens to illegally emigrate to the USA,calling them”heroes and Mexican citizens 1st… just living north of the border”.Putting Mexican Consulates in 50+U.S. cities to give out “Matricula cards, giving slanted history books claiming stolen lands
to U.S. schools overrun with “anchor babies
    creating a “Fifth Column”.
You have to “get real” Mexico is at the
    ROOT of the PROBLEM!

the immigration issue is just bush not doing his job to enforce exsiting laws.

“In the time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act” GEORGE ORWELL

“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and he carries his banners openly. But the traitor moves among those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the galleys, heard in the very hall of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor—he speaks in the accents familiar to his victims, and wears their face and their garment, and he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation—he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of a city—he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to be feared.

Good article on an important issue leaching our nation of its financial resources.
Your comment Chris Lawton, about the Cicero quote, could be applied very well to the movers in this administration who pretend to be Republican, but are truly a far left wing dem lib in disguise (Neocon Trotskyites)
AS I watched the speech on You Tube where Dick Cheney spoke at the Council on Foreign Relations, and revealed that he was a long time member and Director at one time, but he said he made sure that it was kept a secret from the voters in WY where he ran for congress. The CFR members present cheered him for fooling the voters successfully.

The 14th amendment does not need to be ammended with regards to birthright citizenship to the offspring of illegal aliens because it already DENIES it.
Anyone that has studied the 14th amendment, its authors, and the proceedings of the 39th congress knows that birtright citizenshipis a myth.
I for one would like to know when, who, and by what authority our government started bestowing citizenship on anyone born here.

“The Constitution as now amended, forever withholds the right of citizenship in the case of accidental birth of a child belonging to foreign parents within the limits of the country.” ……..

Senator Jacob Howard, Co-author of the citizenship clause of the 14th amendment.

    Seems clear enough to me.

I have worked in Communigy clincs in Los Angles County for several years until recently resigning. I decided I wanted to help Americans, for a change, and not illegal alien gate-crashers from south of the border. I have attended to over ten thousand patients in LA County Community Clincis and less than ten have been Caucasions. Is that the type of Diversity liberals are always exhorting for?. Just as racially homogeneous as the patient base - the LA Community clinic administration is 99.999% Hispanic. From the CEO on down to every manager, and cheif Physician.

There is no incentive in these clinic for quality. Mangaers only cae about how many patients they can cram into these clinics per day. They work the Providers to death by having them see of over thirty patients daily. Why bother for quality? There is no incentive for that. Most of the money comes from federal funds and with a steady supply of money there is no need for basic American suppy and demand economics. So they wind up with fat, lazy Mexican Doctors who aren’t fit for any body else or on their own. Yet become Gods in these clinics, where they are surrounded byHispanic Medical Assistants, lab techs, managers, and, of course, patients. Any Gringo who may want to work in one of these clinics quickly realizes they are up against an Institutionlized racist Hispanic heiracrchy of a type that is completely alien to all America stands for.

the LA County Community Health Clinics are a very corrupt system. And why should any body be suprised? Most Mexicans who live her in America were not born here, and since we know Mexico is one of the most corrupt countries in the world, it is natural that these Community Clinics have become corrupt, too.

There are several solutions to this problem, however. 1: Patients must show proof of citizenship, or legal residence, before they can be treated at these clinics.
2: Private donations must not be accepted. Haim Saban, a rich LA Jew, who recently purchased the Hispanic Cable Conglomerate “Univision” donated $100,000 to the corrupt LA County Community clinics to pacify Hispanic Community and Univision Hispanic shareholder anger of his buyout.
3: America must end the 14th ammendmnet and not allow Anchor babies to stay in this country. We are the last developed nation to have this law, this is the only way to prevent us from paying 50% tax rate by 2015 and to prevent the quickening of the Great American Suicide, of which we are in the midst of now.
