Americans nationwide felt the satisfaction of a job well done when a compromised immigration reform bill was blocked on the Senate floor yesterday morning. Any major reform action is likely stalled until after the 2008 elections so politicians will have ample time to consider the future of immigration for the country.

The freshly amended bill, which would have granted 12 million illegal aliens amnesty, had been polished by backers to rally dwindling support but Republican opponents and activists clamored loudly enough to overhaul the reform.

“This is remarkable because it shows that Americans are engaged and they care deeply…enough for their country to get mad and to fight for it, and that’s the most important thing of all,” said Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), who fought fiercely on Capitol Hill against the proposal. “Americans made phone calls and sent letters, and convinced the Senate to stop this bill.”

When poll after poll concluded that majorities in every state were against the reform, elected leaders were asked to respond accordingly and stop it.

The most recent CNN/Opinion Research poll found that only 30% of Americans had supported the bill.

Democracy Corps reported only 28% supported and Zogby numbers revealed only 3% of Americans approve of the way Congress was handling immigration.

Some leaders disregarded the will of the people in favor of personal and political gain.

God will judge racists suchs as Sessions and Lou Dobbs. I know the feeling-my mother, an illegal alien, was unable to see my dying grandmother back in her home country. It was the saddest Christmas for us two years ago. And monsters like Sessions prevented her from paying her last respect. But I will one day become an American citizen. And Republicans are fighting demographics-it is a losing battle. They will pay dearly as early as next year come election time.
Senator Sessions, you will answer your creator for your hatred. You and the monsters around you have been cursed by millions of crying and suffering people. Remember that!
The immigration bill is coming back in a year and a half and it wil pass. It is inevitable!!!

Sadly, Ivan hates Americans. He is an example of many illegal AND legal aliens. They hate America and wish it to change to be like their home country, ie. Mexico (and othes). Why do they come here? There should be a consideration in this process of exporting America. The French are offering money to aliens from Africa to go back to their countries of origin. Good idea. Many Hispanics more closely identify with European Americans, not Mestisos. These folks vote Republican and wish for Mexico to modernize. They understand. In mexico, the process is made nearly impossible by the small elite group that owns the country. They don’t need citizenship in any country because they have so much money. Ivan should quit hating Americans and go home where he could deal with those who hold his countrymen back. In truth, a revolution is occuring in Mexico and elsewhere. It is the English speaking International Middle Class. Those successful managers and engineers in Mexican automobile manufacturing learn English. This is the inevitable change, not what Ivan imagines.

Ivan, nobody would have stopped your mother from returning TO mexico, but she might have had trouble sneaking back into the USA. Maybe you and youR mother should BOTH GO HOME!

Ivan, you mother was welcome to return to her country.

If your family is robbed or assaulted Im sure you will expect the law and police to do their job and enforce the laws.

But when it affects your famil;es handouts and the laws they break you say the law is unfair.

    Worst kind of hypocrisy.

Yes you are right, we should all sit back and cheer for the forces of crime and corruption to win over the laws of our country.

You are happy because criminals appear poised to win, this is why Americans dont want third world ideals here.

I cannot find a list of the senators who voted againt the immigration bill Maybe I am looking in wrong place or too late wOULD LIKE TO HAVE IT FOR NEXT ELECTION REFERENCE tHANKS

Mary, here is the final vote for cloture that failed and the 46 that voted for this cloture.

If this had passed, the FINAL VOTE would have only needed 51 votes to be law.

So this cloture essentially was the vote that would have made it law, or unstoppable in the senate from that point on.
