Mexican On My Couch
I was just at a Harris Teeter supermarket and stood in line next to a Mexican native
immigrant named Adrian. he was in line asking me if I was in line with a thick accent and this started a conversation in spanish.
I like to socialize and meet people, and opening a conversation in spanish when you are as white looking as me is always a huge icebreaker.
He, like all latinos I speak to in spanish warm up immediately and seem to truly enjoy the surpise of a presumed gringo who is fluent and friendly.
It is at times like meeting such a great friendly man like this that I feel pangs of softness on my immigration rants.
I am the strongest believer in “enforce the laws”, which means deport and enforce illegal immigration laws.
But the fact is that I like Mexican Americans very much, everyone I meet is as friendly and seemingly family oriented as the last.
So on the way back to the office I am thinking about the real problem.
The real problem isnt illegals in the country, its the quantity and bold entitlement attitude that is ruining the “welcome mat” of America.
Example:
If I have an apartment and my friends come over, that is great, thats what I have a place for.
But, if friends keep visiting unannounced every day for a month, sleeping on my couch, eating my food and using my household products…then I dont want them to come by anymore. This is where you remind them that this is not their home, they need to respect it and go home to their own bed and fridge.
They are still my friend, but I want them to get the hell out. Desrespect for my rules and my grace as a host, friend and neighbor has worn out their welcome.
Nothing personal, so don’t act surprised when my patience is at an end.
This is how a welcome guest, like an immigrant, becomes an unwelcome one based on quantity and lack of respect for the rules of the house.
One at a time, I can’t help but hope for the best for each and every Mexican in our nation, but as groups gathered on corners, assembling in “demand marches” and flooding Walmarts it becomes the unwelcome guest,… and the party is out of control and ruined for everyone.
