Sheehan hates AmericaCindy Sheehan decided to stay in her car and not attend Bryant Park in Charlotte as planned.

Sheehan had scheduled a rally against president Bush here in Charlotte, but decided not to attend the public rally as support for her was outnumbered by those that think her views are hateful towards American military.

At the very largest point, you can see that perhaps 80 people reading poems, singing guitar songs about peace and calling Bush a killer can be seen here.

If you look behind them, where all the American flags are flying, that’s the “Gathering Of Eagles” group voicing their opposition to Sheehan’s presence. Including the group with Keith Larson from local radio station WBT 1110 AM, the total opposition was far greater than the tiny group showing support for Sheehan in Charlotte.

The gathering of eagles and other Charlotte area Americans showed up in force to tell her that her defeatist message and anti-war views are not welcome, and their strategy worked.

With Bush’s approval rating at around 33%, and the Democratic congress at an even lower dismal 26% approval, we see that Cindy may perhaps have them both beat?

Sheehan, one of the best-known opponents of the war in Iraq, stayed close to her still-running car at a Bryant Park, and some of her supporters said there was concern about her safety. Live reports from the CMPD and on Local radio WBT, showed there was not a threatening atmosphere, but there was a very large crowd not welcoming her message.

Sheehan moved to Talley’s Green Natural Grocery in Dilworth, where she address a crowd of only about 30 people.

Counter-protesters included decorated veterans and members of the Gathering of Eagles, a national organization of military personnel, veterans and national defense advocates.

They waved American flags and said they were pleased their efforts to outnumber those supporting Sheehan and her message.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Capt. Doug Gallant said there were no problems during the protest and no arrests were made.

Sheehan, the mother of a soldier killed in Iraq, has focused her efforts on impeaching Bush and Cheney after the president commuted the prison sentence of former White House aide Lewis “Scooter” Libby this month.

Sheehan feels that the commuted sentence of an ex-ad is worthy of lengthy impeachment hearings during a time of war.
Libby had been convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice in the CIA leak case.

Earlier Tuesday, Sheehan and supporters briefly went to the Morehead Street offices of Rep. Mel Watt, D-Charlotte.

They wanted to ask Watt, who sits on the House Judiciary Committee, to introduce articles of impeachment or to support a House resolution to impeach Cheney.

Watt did not show any signs of taking these steps or openly agreeing with Sheehan’s supporters.

A Mel Watt representative told the crowd, “I wish you good luck, thank you for your passion,” but didn’t express any further words of support for Sheehan’s efforts against the President.

For all the press and media attention and promotion the crowd was around 30 people in a metro area of 3 million during the time of Sheehan speaking at a grocery store. The crowd seemed to never exceed 125 people at its highest point.

It was my great pleasure to lead this fine group of Eagles & citizens to face Cindy Sheehan in Charlotte NC.
She was a “No Show Cindy”, she did not expect to see the Gathering of Eagles.
We Eagles will face the anti-war movement any where, any time, any weather. I will travel woth Larry Bailey, Chairman for the Gathering of Eagles to face Cindy in Charlottesville Va on July 27. Please find time to join us to defeat her on Va. soil as we did in NC.
