This week, Myrick sent a letter to North Carolina leaders, urging state corrections officers to find out if every incoming inmate is a legal citizen or not.

“The advantage to this is North Carolina could then transfer the criminal illegal aliens into federal custody after they serve their sentences, which is going to save time and money,” Myrick said.

Giving corrections officers this power would be an extension of the federal 287(g) program in Mecklenburg County. In 15 months, Sheriff Jim Pendergraph estimated more than 2,600 convicted illegal immigrants were deported.

By my figures, this is 2080 illegals for every 12 months in just one major US county.

Now apply this figure to the largest county in the 48 continetal states of the US and you get almost exactly 100,000 per year.

And this figure is just one county per state. We have the opportunity to make our jails the revolving door that “revolves illegals” right back to their own country and off our streets.

100, 000 illegal immigrants in the jails per year that have committed crimes and can be removed form US streets?

“The removal process could start while they’re in custody and literally leave the detention centers and be deported back to their home country,” Sheriff Pendergraph said.

Who could possibly be against removing ilegal immigrants that are in US paid jails for committing crimes against US citizens?

Answer: Ruben Campillo of the Latin American Coalition who says “”People are afraid to go to police officers to report crimes…..We’ve seen the numbers of Latino victims of crimes increase as a result of this”

Mr Campillo means is illegal immigrants are afraid to report crimes, because they too are guilty of of immigration crimes. The argument of the Latin American Coalition is that it keeps criminals from ratting each other out?

So 287g makes it hard to protect the criminals from the criminals?
As always, the solution is to go home.

“There’s an opportunity for Congress to address this issue and they’ve failed to do so, and as a result, we have these attempts to try to resolve it locally,” explained Ruben Campillo, Latin American Coalition. He feels immigration is a national—not local—issue, and he says this program only breeds mistrust.

Earlier this month, Congress approved $3 billion in additional funding for the 287(g) program, money which one day could find its way to more North Carolina counties.

A spokesperson with Gov. Mike Easley’s office said that as of late Tuesday they had not yet received Sue Myrick’s proposal in a written letter.

Right now, Mecklenburg, Alamance and Gaston counties check the immigration status of each inmate when they enter jail.”

287 G Details from wikipedia:
Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) was made law in 2006 as a result of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA). Section 287(g) authorizes the Secretary of Homeland Security to enter into agreements with state and local law enforcement agencies, permitting designated officers to perform immigration law enforcement functions, pursuant to a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), provided that the local law enforcement officers receive appropriate training and function under the supervision of sworn U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. Under 287(g), ICE provides state and local law enforcement with the training and subsequent authorization to identify, process, and when appropriate, detain immigration offenders they encounter during their regular, daily law-enforcement activity.
