Mitt Tougher On The Border?
The one thing about Mitt Romney that stood out in this past GOP debate was his renewed energy on the matter of immigration. Romney seemed intent on being “the guy” we are looking for in favor of enforcing US laws.
I think he knows he needs a niche to break away from the pack, and this is the most powerful issue in America. Millions of voters are waiting to cast their vote based on this one issue.
They all know it, so who will step up?
The funny thing with the candidates is that they all talk about the importance of enforcement and border walls or many sorts, but none of them have done anything recently other than Hunter and Tancredo. They all know the people want this view, and they know it is the right thing to stand for, but won’t represent us with strong examples.
I don’t mean they have ignored it, I mean they have not lead the fight other than Tom and Duncan.
(nod to Ron Paul as well)
Now that the poeple have spoken, even sellouts like McCain are pretending to care about enforcing the laws.
I think they have realized that Immigration is the one issue where the public is behind a conservative value in true force.
Immigration is the one issue powerful and offensive enough to inspire honest Americans and to single handedly win the election for someone that champions it.
Like I said, even Senor Juan McCain is pretending to care about fighting illegals since his career took a dive.
I must say though, Mitt Romney has a renewed sense about this goal and the need to use this issue to win the people.
His responses in the debate showed he may be one of the few front-runners that will actually enforce the law to a significant degree.
I can only hope he leads the rest of the party by his example. Republicans and Conservatives want laws respected and crime not to ever be rewarded. Mitt is finally representing us on this one front. For me, and millions of voters, this one issue can win our vote when the time comes to decide.
75% of the country support this view, I hope he chooses to represent us beyond just words.

I think that anybody who seriously believes that Mitt Romney would ultimately (as president) be serious on border/immigration control issues is drinking a new flavor of Kool Aid. Besides, his hair stylist probably worked for a porno production company. By comparison John Edwards looks like he got a haircut from a skinflint daddy who ordered a home barber kit from a classified ad out of a 1964 Popular Mechanics.
hahahahaa…Thats too funny.
I don’t believe it yet, but he is leaning the right way it seems.
He stepped ahead of Rudy for me last night.
Here’s the pizza, and heeeeere’s the pepperoni.
haha
I’ll have my pizza with piss ‘n’ vinager if ya don’t mind.
Romney has stepped up to front-runner on the immigration issue in the top tier.
Rudy is sanctuary city man.
McCain is the amnesty pusher and Fred is McCain-lite and is kind of wishy washy on it.
Hunter and Tancredo are the one-issue immigration candidates and have the toughest approaches, but Romney’s immigration positions are right behind theirs and he actually has a chance to be president!
Also, Romney already has a tough record on illegals in Massachusetts so I am more inclined to believe he will continue along the law and order route since he’s already acted upon it. He stopped illegals from getting in-state tuition and driver’s licenses and figured out a way to use the law so that the state police could work with ICE to round up illegals. The bottomline is that he was not afraid to do the right thing and leaned towards enforcing the law even back in 2003.
Last, but not least, that crazy Sheriff in AZ trusts Mitt on this issue. He’s the toughest anti-illegal guy around and if he’s on Mitt’s team then that speaks volumes! He wouldn’t endorse an immigration wimp.
BTW, that Newt Gingrich burgundy stripe you got on the RH side of your page doesn’t help matters. My view is that one really needs to go back and review Newt’s voting record and remarks on the 1986 so called Comprehensive Immigration Reform. This is a classic case of an opportunistic politician jumping out to lead the parade on its last two blocks with a new flashy baton. Besides, his speech accent clearly makes him a carpetbagger.
RE: Brynne’s post
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is not crazy and I don’t believe you for a moment when you say that he has endorsed Romney.
Kindly provide links that prove your assertions.
It is true, he supports Romney

I meant crazy like a fox in an affectionate way. I LOVE Sheriff Joe Arpaio (I momentarily forgot his name).
I stand corrected and offer my heartfelt apologies. Thanks for the response. But there’s just something slippery about this Romney character.
Now a slight change of subject. You will find in today’s 9/7/07 Vdare what in my view is the finest analysis/commentary on the impending NAU debacle written to date. That article is Allan Wall’s IS MEXICO REALLY NORTH AMERICAN”? www.vdare.com
It is well worth the read. Integrating Mexico on a par with the U.S. and Canada in a political and economic union is tantamount to naming Albania as the third member of the European Union.
And, Are you going to tell me about pimpin’ for Newt?
Romney also fought against bilingual education and instead for English-only classrooms in Mass. He’s the real deal on immigration. When this debate first started swirling with McCain’s first bill, Romney hadn’t formed an opinion on the matter and stated as much. But he formed his opinion and enacted a program equipping Mass State Troopers to capture, detain, and deport illegal aliens. That and he vetoed a bill giving in-state tuiton to illegals.
Romney opposes the right to citizenship to children born of illegal parents here, and he wishes to reform our immigration system to one that brings over skilled workers who speak English, want to be Americans, and will pay for themselves and provide our nation’s industries with much needed skills. We produce an embarrassingly low number of engineers in this country, for instance, and it’s time we stopped focusing on Pepe the Poolboy from Mexico and more on Marius the Mechanical Engineer from Romania.
Romney is the strongest viable candidate on the border, including Fred Thompson. And he’s not been afraid to hold politically incorrect views, either.
See this story from when he was governor in Mass:
