Gas Mileage Marketing
So today I see a car commercial showing people who can’t remember which side the gas tank is on then it flashes a huge 34 MPG on the screen! wow, thats incredible, such innovation!
Then I see a Honda commercial show two guys drive to LA and he never needs gas because he gets 35 MPG! WOW, more great modern technology.
Then I see this commercial for the new car that gets 58 MPG, yes 58 Miles for every gallon of evil Republican gas! Surely this car is called the Al Goremobile and is our defense in global warming! Clearly this is a breakthrough in technology and the latest way to combat “evil Republicans and climate change”!
The problem is that this commercial is 18 years old, and you are a sucker for the “corporate green” marketing approach.
The commercials you see now are for 2008 cars that have 40% worse gas mileage than cars built in the late 1980’s.
Amazing breakthrough technology appears to be your standard bullshit marketing that fools liberals and other forms of idiots.
You see environmentalism surfaces every 10-20 years as trendy and is used to sell you cars, light bulbs and get you to vote Democrat.
While everybody loves to say Republicans and oil companies are evil and just greedy, nobody seems to advertise how General Electric is a much larger Washington lobbyist and stands to MAKE EVEN MORE profit if global warming related laws get passed by liberals.
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, but look at this amazing 34 miles per gallon!
The new 1990 Chevy Cavilier! 34 MPG!

The new 1993 Prizm! 37 MPG!

Some other notables from over 17 years ago
1990 HONDA CIVIC CRX HF - 52 MPG
1990 CHEVROLET SPRINT - 50 MPG
1990 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA - 42 MPG
Well, certainly technology and the amazing inovations have helped us adance in stopping foreign oil dependency?
2006 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA - 42 MPG
2006 HONDA CIVIC HYBRID - 51 MPG
So the Honda Civic is now a hybrid and is actually getting worse gas mileage than 17 years ago?
(But it does come with the word hybrid on the back and will make you appear much more relevent.)
No matter, the word hybrid on the trunk sure makes a great marketing approach to selling California liberals new Hondas. Liberals won’t see it is just a scam since they don’t pay attention to facts.
We already looked at the ridiculous Ford Escape Hybrid commercial where the little girl is embarrassed by her dad because he has an SUV. She asks why we “never talk about it (hybrids)”.
If you havn’t seen this piece of hybrid propaganda you really need to see it to believe it. This commercial embodies the world of make believe, propaganda and fairy tales we can look forward to when a Democrat moves into the white house. Already this little girl is getting tax credits for driving a truck that has the same gas mileage as cars built 20 years ago with the same size engines.
WELL, the Ford Escape hybrid only gets 32 MPG combined and only 30 HWY. That is ONE mile per gallon beter than the more powerful 6 cylinder engine of their own 1990 Ford Taurus Wagon. They hav made the engine smaller and less powerful and increased highway miles exactly by ONE in 18 years of innovation.
I once owned a 1991 Taurus wagon, and I assure you it could have out towed and outrun that green hybrid SUV and done it with the exact same gas consumption. I also assure you I wouldn’t stop and pick up any buzzword spouting brat who didn’t like the free ride she was getting.
Maybe she should be telling her dad to buy a used 1990 Chevy Cavalier and save even more gas and save even more Polar Bears?
I won’t come down on just Ford for being transparent, since Chevy is the “Gas freindly to gas free” marketing tool.
I don’t doubt they are making the cars more gas friendly, they do that every 20 years to get you to buy their cars.
Or is that just the line of BS you are being fed to coincide with the CNN global warming “terror reports”?
The 2008 Chevy malibu gets a combined 20 MPG while the 1997 version got 23 MPG, maybe the gas friendly part is something they mail you later, like a mail in rebate? To make this worse the 2008 model has the worst gas mileage of all Malibu’s. The 2004 model had a combined MPG of 26 with the same 6 cylinder engine.
The Chevy Malibu has gone backwards while the “green” marketing has gone forward.
Another bit of evidence that this and all global warming and green movements refer only to the green of money.
I am considering just buying a sticker that says “hybrid” and putting it on the back of my 2006 Ford Expedition, since the label is what most people buy them for anyway.
Or, I may just buy a used 1990 Chevy Cavalier and really start saving the planet.

Really interesting rant. Really. And these mileage ratings are with the same standard? I didn’t think so.
It is also a fact that all of the old crapcans you mention from the past could not possibly pass the safety or emissions regulations of today - you know - the ones that increase weight and impact fuel efficieny. How ignorant.
So you think gas mileage is exactly the same as it was 20 years ago because of the weight of cars?
The Cavalier mentioned is made of steel and metal, why isnt a fiberglass Saturn getting 60 miles to a gallon?
Ignorant is to ignore th fact that gas mileage has not improved a significant amount in the last 25 years, not NEARLY enough for car companies to pretend they are WORKING REAL HARD to solve the problem.
cal me when the Fuel Cell cars are complete and everywhere, then I will pat them on the backs.
I’m trying to figure out how it’s environmentalists’ fault that the car companies refuse to improve gas mileage and our elected officials refuse to put pressure on them to do so (even to the point of easing regulations in order to give them some cover for their can’t-do attitudes).
If this rant is against car companies’ dishonest marketing, I’m all for it. If it’s against environmentalists for simply wanting a better product, you’re spitting venom at the wrong target.
I dont blame the environmentalists at all, they have a just a valid calling in life.
When I was younger and not aware of my politics, i was a technology buff and dreamed of electric cars and solar recharging cars….the somewhat silly ideas of a kid in the science club maybe.
I THINK the government needs to outlaw use of gas in cars. no production car as of Jan 1 2015 should be allowed to burn gasoline.
Either companies innovate or they close down. They have leached and lied long enough.
I belive in free market, but it is clear these companies supress innovation intentionally.
I feel they would all SUDDENLY FIND those electric and hydrogen car plans they filed away at the request of Gas lobbyists.
I think if your going to preach it and advertise it, then FIX IT RIGHT.
Present the cure or shut up, dont give us the “long term” high cost treatment.
And dont keep reselling the false solutions like a 34 MPG ford 20 years after a 34 MPG ford.
Fix it, dont lie. I believe the cars are ready to be built and forces bigger than I are keeping them hidden away for the last 20 years.
I support environmentalists, but they need to they hader not to fall for the marketing BS being shoveled at them.
In all it sounds like we agree, no more BS, fix it now or go away is my message to car companies…but no more HYBRID BS when better solutions are ready for production.
Also: name one other piece of technology that is used by most people that has not changed its basic design in the last 105 years?
Internal combustion engine. <–
