Girl Scout Cookie Bailout?

By on February 21, 2009

I just had to follow-up on this front page news I saw walking out of Starbucks. On the rack of “news” this headline hit me and gave me a nice laugh. The constant barrage of info-tainment playing the economy down and helping to make the recession worse is reaching new depths.

We don’t doubt that the legislation that gave people with 520 credit scores new $250,000 houses has left our economy hurting. The housing market issues are real and the unemployment from it’s slowdown is real too.

Now the slowdown in consumer spending surely is linked to unemployment for those affected. The extra 2-5% with money problems will mean less spending, but this slowdown has been outside of those directly affected. The constant and seemingly deliberate barrage of info-tainment and scare-o-vision news has clearly made a problem into a big problem.

When the president is basically a hired speaker for fear, traveling around the country giving a speech a day about the sky falling it is no surprise that consumer confidence is at zero. Couple this fact with CNN running 24hr “recession terror” news!! and you get a bad problem made much worse artificially.

So when the front page of the USA today brings us “Girl scout cookie sales crumbling!”, I can only look forward to tomorrow and shake my head at the lefties slurping this kool-aid from a trough.

From USATODAY:

• Eastern South Carolina Council, near Charleston, shows pre-sales down 19% from 868,386 boxes in 2008 to about 700,000 boxes so far this year, says product sales manager Keisha Frost.

• Northeast Ohio Council, near Cleveland, reports pre-sales down about 16%, from 2.5 million to 2.1 million boxes, says Marianne Love, director of business services.

• Nation’s Capital Council, in Northern Virginia, Washington and parts of Maryland, sees 5% fewer pre-sales, down to 3.7 million boxes, says public relations and marketing director Nancy Wood.

• Frontier Council in Las Vegas sales are down 1.3% from 612,792 to 604,524 boxes, says development director Emily Smith.

About two-thirds of the 133 Girl Scout councils nationwide sell cookies from January through March, Tompkins says. The rest sell in the fall. Most proceeds, she says, go to troops and councils to pay for trips, community projects and scholarships.

Love said some leaders are reporting longtime customers purchasing in smaller quantities.

This line really does it for me. “Some leaders” which means there is also the counterpoint.

EX: “Some leaders are not reporting any drop in sales” would be an equally true statement, but you have to ask if that would sell as many newspapers?

How long with the “poor suffering Girl scouts” have to wait before our president gives them a speech and offers them a 50 billion dollar Samoa’s bailout package?

We need to act fast or the thin mint worker’s union will have to cut back jobs, we need immediate bipartisan action to save the dying Peanut Butter Sandwiches industry.

I am certain there would be another 100 billion to install solar panels at the next Girl Scout meeting in your neighborhood.
