Oscar Films Pretty Weak

By on February 22, 2009

I have completed seeing all the nominated best pictures. This year is very weak and looking back to the past when great films finished second, this year a 3 star movie will win first.

I am pulling for Slumdog Millionaire for the small market appeal and a movie that great for the first 75% and just good for the last 25%. Slumdog is a solid B+, but it’s a sad day that a B+ is by far the best a year of spending and marketing has produced.

A fun read from the news-herald.com says it pretty well below.

“As of this writing, I haven’t compiled the top-10 list included in this package of Oscar stories, but I’m not exactly excited to do it. I love becoming engrossed in a dramatic, thought-provoking film. But, honestly, I was more captivated by “Iron Man” than at least a couple of the Oscar nominees.

“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”? Yes, it was curious how a movie could run that long and have so little conflict.

“The Reader”? Sure, I liked it, but I would have been just as happy at home reading.

And “Slumdog”? Maybe it’s my distaste for game shows and the way this country can get obsessed with something like “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” that makes me, in a very small way, resent this film’s success. I should be more excited that so many people have embraced an indie film set in a foreign locale and told partially with subtitles, but I’m not. I guess I was just hoping never to hear the phrase “final answer” again.

So “Slumdog Millionaire” will be the final answer tonight. Oh, well.

I’m going back to sleep. Someone wake me when this year has something good to offer at the movies.”
